Status - förkasta och välj själv
Dagens Metro har en stor (nåja) artikel om statusjakt. Framförallt unga män satsar sina pengar på i en socioekonomisk statusjakt på rätt prylar och rätt kläder. Resultatet blir ekonomiska problem för många. För oerhört många fler så blir resultatet troligen en dålig självkänsla och en känsla av otillräcklighet.
Och visst är känslan att vara utvald eller “lite bättre” än de andra angenäm. Om jag drev en krog så skulle jag ha ett VIP-rum där spriten var dyrare, men där inte vem som helst fick komma in. Och innanför det VIP-rummet så skulle jag ha ännu ett VIP-rum där det bara serverades snordyr champagne. Det verkar faktiskt vara så enkelt. Fråga vilket krogägare som helst, eller kolla in hur folks stolthet över att släppas in i VIP-rummen.
För den som arbetar sig uppåt i socitetens statustrappa så finns det dock oöverstigliga mål. Finast av allt verkar kungafamiljen vara. Någonstans därunder kommer de gamla adelssläkterna. “Nyrika” är lite fult - det är högre status att ha ärvt sina pengar än att förtjänat dem på egna meriter. Du kan inte vinna - möjligen kan du få vara med bland de fina herrarna och damerna ibland.
Jag tror att vägen till självkänsla är att definiera sin egen statuskontext och förkasta de som du inte gillar. Fundera på om du blir lyckligare av att komma in i VIP-rummet, eller om det känns bättre att genomskåda tricket? Själv så ställer jag mig inte i kön till Spy Bar och hoppas på att få tillhöra de lyckliga utvalda som får komma in - om de bara vill släppa in mig på nåder så tack, men nej tack. Och nej, jag uttrycker inte min personlighet genom att köra en fet bil, klä mig i überdyra jeans, visa upp den senaste mobilen eller hänga på de häftigaste ställena. Jag gör istället det jag trivs med, och söker uppskattning och bekräftelse genom det. På så vis väljer jag min egen statuskontext.
Att strunta i andras bedömningar är inte alltid enkelt, det får man inte luras att tro. Men troligen är det något man måste lära sig för att må bra.
